Inability to get to sleep and get a good nights rest...

 

Everyone knows what it feels like when you just cant get off to sleep at night, mulling over some problem or another.  Sometimes though, through periods of sleeplessness it becomes impossible to get a good nights sleep.

 

Sleep deprivation  can be debilitating, affecting every aspect of our waking life.  Indeed it used to be used as a form of torture because of its absolute effectiveness.

 

The law of reversed effect...

The more you say 'I've got to get to sleep' the less likely it becomes.  The worry of not getting to sleep means anxiety levels rise and consequently adrenalin is released making the situation even worse.  You begin clock-watching and counting down the diminishing hours that are left to you to get to sleep and then panicking as those hours become shorter and shorter.  It can be become a real merry-go-round.
